What is a mid-stream sample?
When you collect a mid-stream sample, you are collecting the urine at the midstream, not at the beginning or the end.
This is to prevent any contamination of the urine.
Urine samples are easily contaminated when they come into contact with the genitals.
For men, refer to the steps below:
Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds.
Use the included wipe and clean the tip of the penis gently and thoroughly. If you are uncircumcised, pull back the foreskin and clean the area well.
Before you start, open the urine collection up and have it ready in your non-dominant hand
Aim the penis to the urinal with your dominant hand and start urinating. Don't collect the urine at this stage.
After a second or two, put the urine cup directly under the urinary stream to collect a mid-stream sample.
Remove the cup after it is filled 1/3 or halfway.
If you don't have much urine output, just obtain as much as you can.
Cap the cup securely and do not touch the inside of the urine cup.
Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds.
For women, refer to the steps below:
Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds
Use the included wipe and clean the area around the vagina gently and thoroughly
Take a seat and spread the vagina walls (away from the urethra)
With your dominant hand, hold the urine cup hovering under your vagina and start urinating. Don't collect urine at this stage.
After a second or two, put the urine cup directly under the urinary stream and collect a mid-stream sample.
Remove the cup after it is filled 1/3 or halfway.
If you don't have much urine output, just obtain as much as you can.
Cap the cup securely and do not touch the inside of the urine cup.
Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds.
